Chhath Puja begins with nahay-khay. Nahay-Khay takes place on the Chaturthi Tithi of Shukla Paksha of Kartik month.

On this day the entire house is cleaned and sanctified. Gourd curry and rice are prepared on this day.

Chhath Puja 2024 Kharna / Lohanda
Kharna is celebrated on the fifth day of Shukla Paksha of Kartik month. It is celebrated on the second day of the nahay-khay.

On the day of Kharna, the fast is observed from morning to evening. Even water is not drunk during the fast.

The evening Arghya of Chhath Puja is celebrated on Kartik Shukla Shashthi Tithi.

On this day all the people of the house start preparing for Chhath Puja from early morning itself.
Arrangements are made for fruits, prasad etc. On this day Thakua or Thekua, Bhuswa (rice flour laddus) etc. are made as offerings of worship.
All the offerings of Chhath Puja are kept in bamboo soup and doura etc.
On this day, along with Chhath Vrati, other people of the house go to Chhath Ghat on the banks of a river or pond.
All the Prasad etc. are kept there. Incense, lamp is lit. Songs of Chhathi Maiya are sung.
Sometime before sunset, Chhath vrati takes bath in water and meditates on Sun God.

This is the fourth and last day of Chhath Puja. People reach Chhath Ghat before sunrise. Incense, lamps are lit. Songs of Chhathi Maiya are sung. Fireworks are also done in many places.
Morning Arghya is offered to the Sun God on this day. The Sun God is worshipped.
After this, worship and havan is also done at Chhath Ghat.
Chhath fast ends with offering Arghya to the rising sun in the morning. And after worshiping the Sun God and Chhathi Maiya by Chhath Vrati, Chhath Vrat is ended with Paran.
