Why is Govardhan Puja celebrated? govardhan puja story
Celebrating Govardhan Puja is directly related to Lord Krishna.
A story is prevalent in this regard. According to this story, Indra Dev became proud of his power. Lord Shri Krishna made a Leela to break the pride of Indra Dev.
When all the people were preparing for the worship of Indra Dev, Shri Krishna asked them to worship Govardhan Parvat instead of worshiping Indra Dev.
After listening to Lord Krishna, people started worshiping Govardhan Parvat instead of Indra Dev. This made Indra Dev angry.
Indra Dev started heavy rain. Everyone started crying. On this Lord Krishna lifted the Govardhan mountain on his little finger.
All the Brijwasi took shelter under the Govardhan mountain with their cows.
Indra kept raining fiercely for seven consecutive days and Krishna kept lifting the Govardhan mountain. Then Indra Dev realized that Shri Krishna is not an ordinary man. He went to Lord Brahma. Brahma made him aware of the truth that Shri Krishna himself is an incarnation of Lord Vishnu.
On this Indra Dev realized his mistake. He apologized to Shri Krishna. Then Shri Krishna put the Govardhan mountain down.
After this all the Brijwasis worshiped Annakoot and Govardhan. Since then Govardhan Puja started being performed every year.
Brijwasis worship Govardhan mountain along with cows on this day.
In other places, it is worshiped by making a symbol of Govardhan mountain. Along with this, cows are also worshiped on this day.
On the day of Govardhan Puja, color is applied after bathing the cow, bull etc. Also a new rope is worn. On this day, cows and bullocks are fed mixed with rice and jaggery.
